An Act to amend the Protection of Animals Act 1911 to increase the penalties for offences against animals under section 1(1).

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 Amendment of Protection of Animals Act.
(1) In section 1(1) of the Protection of Animals Act 1911 (offences of cruelty to animals), for the words from “shall be liable” onwards substitute “ shall be liable on summary conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale, or both ” .

2 Short title, repeals, commencement and extent.
(1) This Act may be cited as the Protection of Animals (Penalties) Act 1987.
