HUMAN FERTILISATION AND EMBRYOLOGY

Whereas a draft of these Regulations has been approved by resolution of each House of Parliament:

Now therefore, the Secretary of State in exercise of powers conferred by section 45 of and paragraph 3(2) and (3) of Schedule 2 to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990( 1 ), hereby makes the following Regulations:—

Citation, commencement and interpretation

1. —(1) These Regulations may be cited as the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (Research Purposes) Regulations 2001 and shall come into force on 31st January 2001.

(2) In these Regulationsthe Act” means the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 .

Further purposes for which research licences may be authorised

2. —(1) The Authority may issue a licence for research under paragraph 3 of Schedule 2 to the Act for any of the purposes specified in the following paragraph.

(2) A licence may be issued for the purposes of—

(a) increasing knowledge about the development of embryos;

(b) increasing knowledge about serious disease, or

(c) enabling any such knowledge to be applied in developing treatments for serious disease.
