The Traffic Signs (Amendment) General Directions 2004

The Secretary of State for Transport, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 65 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984( 1 ) hereby gives the following Directions:
Citation and commencement
1. These Directions may be cited as the Traffic Signs (Amendment) General Directions 2004 and shall come into force on 27th May 2004.
Amendment of the Traffic Signs General Directions 2002
2. —(1) Direction 42 of the Traffic Signs General Directions 2002( 2 ) is amended as follows.
(2) At the end of paragraph (5) insert “and, if coloured yellow, may be—
(a) reflectorised;
(b) fluorescent; or
(c) both reflectorised and fluorescent”.
(3) For paragraphs (6) and (7) substitute—
“ (6) Except as provided in paragraph (7), a yellow backing board for a sign shall be rectangular in shape.
(7) A backing board for a combination of the sign shown in diagram 2402.1 with the sign shown in diagram 670 may be of any shape including rectangular. ”

1984 c. 27 . Section 65 was amended by the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984 (c. 54) , Schedule 9, paragraph 93, the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 (c. 42) , section 153, the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, Schedule 8, paragraph 48 and the Road Traffic Act 1991 (c. 40) , Schedule 4, paragraph 29. Amendments were made relating to the exercise of powers under section 65 by S.I. 1999/672 and 1750 . By virtue of S.I. 1993/3143 the functions under section 65 which were exercisable by “the Ministers acting jointly” were transferred to the Secretary of State.
Part II of S.I. 2002/3113 , to which there are amendments not relevant to these Directions.
