The Secretary of State makes the following Order in exercise of the powers conferred by section 9(4) of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989( 1 ).
Citation, commencement and application
1. —(1) This Order may be cited as the Local Government (Assistants for Political Groups) (Remuneration) (England) Order 2006 and shall come into force on 4th July 2006.
(2) This Order applies to relevant authorities in England only( 2 ).
Specified maximum amount
2. The amount specified for the purposes of section 9(3) of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 (assistants for political groups) is £34,986.
Revocation
3. In so far as it applies to relevant authorities in England, the Local Government (Assistants for Political Groups) (Remuneration) Order 1995( 3 ) is revoked.

See section 9(11) of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 (“the 1989 Act”) for the definition of “relevant authority”. The Secretary of State’s functions under section 9, so far as exercisable in relation to Wales, are transferred to the National Assembly for Wales by article 2 of the National Assembly for Wales (Transfer of Functions) Order 1999 ( S.I. 1999/672 ); see the entry in Schedule 1 for the 1989 Act. The Secretary of State’s functions under section 9 of the 1989 Act, so far as exercisable in relation to Scotland, are now functions of the relevant Scottish minister by virtue of the Scotland Act 1998 (c. 46) .
