The Police (Minimum Age for Appointment) Regulations 2006

The Secretary of State makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 50 and 51 of the Police Act 1996( 1 ).
In accordance with section 63(3)( 2 ) of that Act he has supplied a draft of regulations 1 and 3 to the Police Advisory Board for England and Wales and has taken into consideration their representations.
Citation and commencement
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Police (Minimum Age for Appointment) Regulations 2006 and shall come into force on 19th September 2006.
Amendment of the Special Constables Regulations 1965
2. In regulation 1(c) of the Special Constables Regulations 1965( 3 ) (qualifications for appointment) for “18 ½ years” substitute “18 years”.
Amendment of the Police Regulations 2003
3. In regulation 10(1)(c) of the Police Regulations 2003 ( 4 ) (qualifications for appointment to a police force) for “18 years 6 months” substitute “18 years”.

There are amendments to section 63 which are not relevant to these Regulations.
S.I. 1965/536 . Following consolidation of section 34 of the Police Act 1964 (c. 48) , those Regulations have effect as if made under section 51 of the Police Act 1996. Regulation 1 of those Regulations was substituted by regulation 2(2) of the Special Constables (Amendment) Regulations 2002 ( S.I. 2002/3180 ).
S.I. 2003/527 ; regulation 10(1) was amended by S.I. 2005/2834 .
