General Medical Council, R (on the application of) v Abdel-Razik

The court may extend interim conditions imposed on a doctor’s registration where the extension is consented to and is appropriate in the circumstances. The extension may continue the conditions beyond their existing expiry date for a specified period.

The General Medical Council applied to extend for one year an order imposing interim conditions on the defendant doctor’s registration as a medical practitioner. The doctor consented to the extension. The application was considered shortly before the existing order was due to expire.

1. The application was granted. The interim conditions on the defendant doctor’s registration were extended for one year.
2. The doctor had consented to the extension, and the court was satisfied that making the order was appropriate in the circumstances.
3. The existing order, which would otherwise expire on 5 August 2005, was extended until 5 August 2006.
